The network, which was installed in February 2017, uses a mix of copper and fibre-optic cables to provide speeds of up to 50Mbps.
“It’s the perfect solution for those who want to get online at the click of a button and the city council was pleased to take on this challenge to make sure it can provide a world-class network for all of our residents,” Ms Henshaw said.
The Melbourne Network is part of a wider network of about 150 wi-fi mesh networks in the city.
It is operated by the Melbourne Network Alliance, a joint venture between the Australian Food Network and the Melbourne City Network Alliance.
“The Melbourne network is the largest network in the country, covering more than 1,300,000 homes and businesses,” Ms Dickson said.
“With more than 200,000 users in Melbourne and a population of more than 13 million, it is a huge network that supports businesses across the city.”
The networks were built to help improve network connections for the city, where electricity prices have skyrocketed and the cost of wi-Fi has increased by around 20 per cent.
“This project is about ensuring the quality of network connections across the CBD can be kept at peak levels and meet the needs of residents,” Mr Hensaw said.
A spokesperson for the Food and Grocery Council said the council had not received any formal requests for the project, but was aware of the project.
“Councils work with food network operators to improve and enhance their services so we can deliver the best service possible for our customers and support their growth and growth in the future,” the spokesperson said.
